Mission and Goals
Mission and Goals of the Center
National Chengchi University (NCCU) positions general education as a form of liberal, broad-based, and holistic education. It is guided by three main goals:
- Establishing a foundation of core knowledge,
- Emphasizing the integration and transformation of interdisciplinary knowledge through learning, and
- Cultivating a broad perspective and essential lifelong skills.

To implement the philosophy of general education and align with the three major goals mentioned above, the University has established corresponding mechanisms and strategies: designing “Core General Education Courses” to build students’ foundational core knowledge; encouraging interdisciplinary learning and integrating professional education with general education through institutional design, thereby guiding students to integrate and transform knowledge during their learning; and establishing a curriculum framework across seven major domains alongside a self-directed learning system to cultivate students’ civic literacy as well as their abilities in self-exploration, critical thinking, and practical action.
LEAD Talent Development Goals
From nearly a century ago until today, National Chengchi University (NCCU) has always prioritized talent cultivation and continuously strives for growth and breakthroughs in various areas. Compared to the past, today’s world is developing at an ever-faster pace, and the future is even more unpredictable and full of uncertainties. Reflecting on the university’s core responsibilities and responding to future development trends, NCCU, under the vision of academic affairs development, has put forward the “LEAD” talent development goals:
-
Literacies
In the context of globalization, the crossing of geographic, cultural, and social boundaries has become increasingly frequent. The explosive growth of the knowledge economy and information technology has made information gathering and big data applications more common. NCCU’s first core goal is to cultivate students’ communication, literacy, and critical thinking skills, enabling them to master oral and written expression, data literacy, information evaluation, as well as cross-cultural reasoning and communication. This equips NCCU students to navigate interpersonal communication and public engagement with ease in the future.
-
Exploration
NCCU’s second core goal is to encourage students to explore both inwardly and outwardly. The University guides students to understand themselves throughout their learning journey, discovering their interests and potential, while also building their ability and confidence to explore and make decisions. Additionally, NCCU provides on-campus opportunities and resources for learning and exploration, and facilitates connections to off-campus learning environments, ensuring that students’ learning extends beyond the campus. This broadens their practical skills and stimulates their motivation to explore the world.
-
Action
NCCU’s third core goal is to cultivate students’ local engagement and global citizenship. We aspire for students to care about both local and global issues, develop a sense of responsibility toward public affairs, and possess the ability to transform knowledge and skills into social practice—becoming a driving force for social well-being and sustainable development.
-
Disciplines
NCCU’s fourth core goal is to develop students’ interdisciplinary knowledge and skills. We expect students to engage in cross-disciplinary learning at NCCU, building diverse competencies and integrating them comprehensively—combining both hard skills and soft skills—to become Pi-shaped talents who can excel in the future society.

NCCU’s general education emphasizes liberal arts, broad-based competence, and holistic education, guided by three main goals: establishing foundational core knowledge; emphasizing the integration and transformation of interdisciplinary knowledge through learning; and cultivating a broad perspective along with essential lifelong skills. This approach aims to nurture students’ depth, empathy, and character, preparing them to become Pi-shaped talents with both a global outlook and a strong sense of social responsibility.
Students build a foundation of liberal arts core knowledge through core general education courses. With the support of institutional frameworks, general education serves as a stepping stone for interdisciplinary exploration and learning, integrating general and professional education while facilitating the transformation and synthesis of knowledge during the learning process. Guided by the curriculum framework across seven major domains and a self-directed learning system, students will develop strong civic literacy and cultivate lifelong essential skills such as broad perspective, self-exploration, critical thinking, and practical action. Aligned with NCCU’s future talent development goals under the “LEAD” framework, general education will continue to be refined and play a pivotal role in this developmental blueprint.
