General Education Structure
The University’s General Education curriculum is divided into three main categories:
The first category is Language General Education, which includes courses in Chinese language and foreign languages.
The second category is General Education Courses, which cover four major domains: Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Informatics and Computing.
The third category is College General Education, which includes general education courses offered by colleges and self-directed learning courses.
Starting from the 2020 academic year (Academic Year 109), students admitted to the university are required to complete 28 credits of General Education courses (any credits beyond this requirement will not be counted). These include:
• 3 to 6 credits of General Education in Chinese
• 6 credits of General Education in Foreign Languages
• 3 to 7 credits each from the three major domains of General Education—Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences
• 2 to 3 credits of General Education in Informatics and Computing (students majoring in information-related disciplines are exempt from his requirement; see “Course Requirements” for details)
• 0 to 3 credits of General Education in College
In addition, within the General Education curriculum, a set of Core General Education Courses is offered with the aim of building students’ foundational knowledge, fostering civic awareness, and cultivating broad perspectives, critical thinking, and self-directed learning abilities.
These Core General Education Courses are designed as interdisciplinary course clusters, and students are required to complete at least two core courses from different domains among the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences.
