Core General Education

Features of the Core General Education Curriculum

At NCCU, the core general education curriculum is guided by the philosophy of “broad scope and solid foundation.” While establishing students’ fundamental knowledge and skills, it emphasizes the integration and connectivity of knowledge, aiming to reduce fragmentation of learning content.

Moreover, NCCU supports departments participating in core general education teaching through an increased faculty quota system and dedicated course subsidies. These measures help build a university-wide support network for core general education instruction, facilitating the integration of general education with professional training.

Development Direction of General Education

Since its official implementation in the 2011 academic year, NCCU’s core general education curriculum system has established a distinctive feature of the University’s general education. Over time, the system has undergone adjustments in curriculum structure, subject areas, and credit requirements, with continuous improvements. After more than a decade of implementation, we recognize the need for the general education curriculum to evolve in response to rapid changes in society and the times.

Firstly, the design and positioning of the core general education curriculum need to place greater emphasis on interdisciplinary learning, active practice, and self-directed learning. The curriculum should be designed as interdisciplinary courses that enhance interaction among core general education classes, helping students develop habits of cross-disciplinary learning. Meanwhile, single-subject courses should be classified as Common General Education Courses, distinguishing their roles and highlighting the spirit and value of core general education.

Secondly, NCCU’s current general education tends to focus on cultivating cognitive thinking skills. Moving forward, the curriculum development should prioritize enhancing students’ self-awareness and strengthening learning objectives related to affective domains such as emotion, action, ethics, and values.

Thirdly, general education should establish closer connections with professional education to more effectively support students’ interdisciplinary exploration, facilitating knowledge integration and transformation through diverse learning experiences.

Talent Cultivation and Social Responsibility

Cultivating future leaders with penetrating literacy and capabilities is a fundamental responsibility of NCCU. We aspire for our graduates to guide us through an uncertain future. As a hub for knowledge creation and talent development, a university that lacks flexibility in the face of changing times risks losing its promise to the future. Therefore, NCCU must become a sanctuary for talent cultivation that embraces future challenges.

How can a university maintain its influence amid a future full of volatility and uncertainty? How can NCCU uphold its social responsibilities in the rapidly changing 21st century? We believe that breaking down barriers and frameworks to build an open and free university will be NCCU’s long-term development goal.

Within such a learning environment, students receive holistic education, cultivating the competencies of modern citizenship. They develop the practical ability to transform knowledge into action, engage in interdisciplinary learning, and integrate knowledge. This equips them with the skills and vision necessary to face a rapidly evolving and highly uncertain future and to contribute actively to the sustainable development of society.
