Teaching Assistant
Purpose
To cultivate students’ independent thinking and analytical abilities, core general education courses differ from regular general education courses. They are three-credit courses, and when conducted through small group discussions, instructors should schedule one hour of group discussion for every two hours of lecture. Discussion times should be included in the course timetable. Through these small group discussion sessions, students can explore interdisciplinary knowledge under the guidance of Teaching Assistants (TAs). The course planning principles are as follows:
(1) Course Structure
Core general education courses are conducted with 2 hours of lecture and 1 hour of small group discussion. Flexibility in scheduling is allowed, but the 2:1 ratio must be maintained, and discussion sessions must be included in the timetable. An updated version should be uploaded each semester.
(2) Implementation Focus
The main focus of core general education courses is to establish a small group discussion system. TAs should plan discussion topics and teaching materials based on the course community discussions and the syllabus. TAs lead students in small group discussions, encouraging participation, full expression, communication, and critical thinking. Discussions should focus on course topics and not be used for course review or group assignment time.
(3) TA Allocation
To implement the small group discussion system, one TA is allocated for every 35 students enrolled. Each TA should divide the students into separate groups and conduct discussions in different spaces. The center will arrange observers to attend and evaluate the discussion sessions.
Application Procedure
Instructors should apply for TAs for their class through the TA application platform within the schedule announced by the Academic Affairs Office for the semester. Instructors must upload the course syllabus, specific TA responsibilities, and the TA course plan. Applicants should explain how TA resources will be integrated into the course, detailing each TA’s responsibilities, training methods, and how experience is passed on among TAs.
