Self-directed Learning Application

Course-based Self-directed Learning

Starting from the Spring semester of the 2020 academic year, NCCU implemented the Course-Based Self-directed Learning system. These courses are either independently planned by students or co-designed by students and faculty. One or more students may initiate a proposal to open a 1–2 credit course under this framework.

The self-directed learning proposal must be reviewed by the College General Education Domain Committee and subsequently approved by the General Education Committee and the Academic Affairs Council before the course can be officially offered. The instructor is responsible for course planning, instruction, and grading, and is eligible to receive instructional compensation equivalent to that for supervising a master’s thesis.

To help students learn to manage learning resources, course-based self-directed learning courses include a budget. The maximum allowable budget is calculated as:

Instructional compensation + (Instructor hourly rate × number of credits × number of weeks). Additionally, students may apply for supplementary funding to support their self-directed learning projects.

Certification-based

The Certification-based Self-directed Learning system has been implemented since the 2023 academic year. To encourage students to develop problem-solving and innovative practical abilities, students may apply for self-directed learning credit certification after completing a learning project independently or under the guidance of a faculty member. Credit certification may also be obtained through participation in programs such as overseas internships or international volunteer work.

This type of self-directed learning falls into three categories: Academic Exploration, Action-Based Practice, and Creative Implementation.
