Academic Affairs / Application for General Education Credit Recognition

The Center for General Education, Office of Academic Affairs (hereinafter referred to as the “Center for General Education”), encourages students to engage in diverse and interdisciplinary learning. It administers the recognition of credits earned through double majors, minors, and credit programs as general education credits. Where the course-offering unit agrees that students enrolled in double majors, minors, or credit programs may apply for such recognition, it should complete the General Education Area Classification Survey Form and submit it to the designated contact person for each area at the Center for General Education. The proposal will be reviewed by the General Education Domain Committee Meeting, the General Education Committee Meeting, and the Academic Affairs Meeting each semester. Upon approval, the Center for General Education will announce it online, thereby completing the application for recognition of general education credits.

Instructions for Application for Recognition

I. The Office of Academic Affairs approved the “National Chengchi University Directives for the Recognition of General Education Credits” at the ad hoc Academic Affairs Meeting held in the spring semester of Academic Year 108. The key points are as follows:

(1) Students taking courses in double majors, minors, or credit programs may submit an application. Upon approval, credits earned from such courses may be recognized as general education credits; however, they may not be recognized as core general education credits.

(2) Recognition of credits from a double major is capped at nine credits. Recognition of credits from each minor is capped at six credits; for two minors, the combined maximum is nine credits. Recognition of credits from a credit program is capped at three credits. The total number of credits recognized under the above categories may not exceed nine credits.

(3) Students must submit the required application documents to the Center for General Education for review of the eligible domain and number of credits. Recognition is completed only after review and approval by the Office of Academic Affairs Registration Section. Applicants seeking recognition of credits from a credit program as general education credits must first have their eligibility and the courses’ inclusion in the program curriculum confirmed by the unit offering the program.

II. In accordance with the principle of recognition by domain of expertise and to strengthen interdisciplinary learning outcomes, the Center for General Education asks units offering double majors, minors, and credit programs to indicate the general education domain for which recognition is being sought. Double majors, minors, and credit programs may apply for recognition in a single area or across multiple areas. Recognition in the Informatics and Computing area is limited to required or course-cluster courses that demonstrably involve programming. For credit programs, applications must be completed course by course, with the proposed general education area specified for each course. Once announced, the recognized domain may not be changed without due cause. If a course is revised, please notify the Center for General Education and submit a new application for recognition.

III. The domain-classification survey forms completed by each unit will subsequently be submitted to the relevant domain committee members for review. They will then be submitted to the General Education Committee Meeting and the Academic Affairs Meeting for record and announced thereafter.

For credit programs, please provide a list of courses required for program completion to facilitate subsequent review.
